What are the Causes of Gastric Problems?

When you reach the age of 40+, the common problem in many individuals is “gas” or “gastric stomach problems”. The root cause of the problem is in the stomache/oesophagus. There may be disturbance of gastric mucosa which can lead to acid secretion. Gastric problems can also occur when acids contact stomache nerve endings. They cause lot of pain and discomfort.

So what is Gastric Mucosa?

The gastric mucosa is the mucous membrane layer of the stomach which contains the glands and the gastric pits. In men it is about 1 mm thick and its surface is smooth, soft, and velvety.

what are gastric problems

It is a common knowledge that everybody has gas and eliminates it by burping or passing it through the rectum. But this can be uncomfortable and embarrassing when the quantity of gas increases in the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. The human gas primarily consists primarily of –  carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and sometimes methane – which are mostly odorless vapors.

Causes of Gastric Problems ?

When there is lot of physical and mental stress, it can cause ulceration. Ulceration is nothing but formation of an ulcer or aggregation of ulcers.

An ulcer is a discontinuity or break in a bodily membrane that impedes the organ of which that membrane is a part from continuing its normal functions.

When there is lot of inflammation of the gastric mucosa. This can be due to acidic foods, alcohol, smoking, stress and drugs.

Another cause can be Antibiotics. The negative side of antibiotics is that it can kill good bacteria which are useful for digestion. They not only affect the  beneficial bacteria but also the pathogenic bacteria which are helpful in protecting us against diseases.

Finally the basic causes for gastric problems can be stress, inflammation of gastric mucosa and antibiotics. So reducing stress, eating proper foods and taking less antibiotics (if possible) can reduce the effects of gastric problems.

I treatment for stomach garastic in calcutta medical reserch instute but I have no idea how long time take medicin during gastrastic plz u tell me about gastrastic duration month ..
    thnkuu

    • May 3, 2016

@zakisamar: I’m NOT a better expert then medical research institute. But generally gastric medication should be taken BEFORE food and you have to do trial and error after some times. Consult your doctor on the duration. If after that time, you still feel pain you continue it and check with your doctor from time to time.

    Hi Prof Sridhar,
I am facing a problem with foods that contain tamarind. Whenever I eat them even in very small quantities, I burp a lot after the meal. Its very uncomfortable. I used to suffer from gastritis but not facing any problem with that off late. Any home remedies that you recommend?

    • October 9, 2015

@Ravi kiran: According to Internet sources, drinking tamarind water with a little asafetida and cumin added is a good herbal remedy for gastritis. But personally, since tamarind is little citrus in nature, you may have that feel. So see if any other food is interfering with this item. It could be spices etc. Check by eating tamarind alone and see if that causes problem. If it does, try the above home remedy. If it doesn’t check with other items in your diet.

i have long time gastric left side so pain for my hart so mony doctar chek but no rilif every day night time so pain so please give me right medicine name

    • October 2, 2015

@farid khan: I’m not a doctor BTW. So I can’t prescribe medicine. If you are really interested, we can further diagnose based on my “research” approach. What are the other symptoms you are having? What is your life style? Age and any bad habits? What is food style and timing? But generally for chest pain due to gas, I can suggest a few natural remedies.
      1. Lying down on the left-side during sleep can sometimes give you relief.
      2. Mustard prevents gas build up.
      3. Indian spices like cardamom, cumin and turmeric are known to have beneficial properties for aiding the digestion.
      4. Drink lots of fluids.
      5. Papaya reduces bloating…

Also chest pain can be a indication of further complications like heart-attack etc. but not in every case. So better check with a good physician, to see that other complications than gas are eliminated.

I have gastric problem since long which cause I am depressed all time. Headage only one side. I take antidepression tablet. What can I do. When we take tablet I feel batter.

    • April 25, 2015

@raza. Gastric can be a consequence of other problems. If headache is one side, it can be migraine. But it can be anxiety and depression also. But don’t take too much anti-depressants. Just use them when necessary.

i am feeling a few times unconscious mind, recently i have consult doctor and he told me that it is due to gastric problem,i want to know that gastric problem can lead a person to unconscious mind.

    • December 17, 2014

@noorulla: Gastric problem can be a cause of many under-lying diseases. For eg: stress, diabetes were my reasons for my gastric trouble. I’m currently following Ayurveda and felt some relief from the same symptoms as yours. Better research the Internet and find the underlying cause.
