Is apple cider vinegar good for gastritis? Apple cider vinegar is considered as an ancient “folk” remedy. The recent studies on this compound have shown positive health benefits and provides key ingredients for improving gastric problems. It gives increased energy, improves gastrointestinal health, works as an anti-fungal agent, and decreases triglyceride levels.

The good and bad about apple cider vinegar in the cure of gastritis

Before we answer the question, “Does apple cider vinegar cure gastritis?“, let’s see how it is prepared. The vinegar that is produced from apples, comes in two steps. In the first step, fruit is left to ferment. Then the sugar in it changes to alcohol. In the second step, the alcohol is allowed to ferment. This will transform to vinegar. The main component of vinegar is acetic acid, a caustic substance.

In gastritis, the lining of the stomach becomes very rough and looks like a rash as if it’s burned. Under healthy conditions, the stomach lining releases hydrochloric acid. This will help enzymes break the food down. Since this is acidic, your stomach covers with a protective coating of mucus, to prevent inflammation to its lining.

Generally, a natural remedy like apple cider vinegar mixed with honey and diluted in water increases hydrochloric acid production. This improves digestion and stomach lining immunity and prevents inflammation. Though the dilution of vinegar makes it harmless, one has to keep in mind of the different causes of gastritis.

The typical symptoms of gastritis are heartburn, nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, hiccups, black, tarry stools etc. The primary causes of gastric are – Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria, conditions related to vitamin B12 deficiency, too much of medication use, acidic drinks, spicy foods and other improper diet.

How is Apple Cider Vinegar Effective Against Gastritis?

According to the Journal of Nutritional Medicine, “Malic acid has been shown to improve energy production in oxygen-deprived conditions”. Apple cider vinegar contains malic acid, which is produced during the process of converting carbohydrates. This boosts energy production.

There are healthy bacteria in the gastrointestinal system. This good bacteria, generally thrive in an environment with a balanced pH.  Due to poor diet or taking too much pain-killers, can cause heartburn, acidity, diarrhea and stomach pains. The malic acid present in the Apple cider vinegar acts as a buffer and stabilizes the pH. As a result, healthy bacteria like Lactobacillus are able to flourish. Also there are additional benefits with ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar). It improves absorption of calcium and other nutrients in the body, which helps the prevention of on-set of osteoporosis and other illnesses.

Fungi live well in acidic environment. But Apple cider vinegar alters the pH and does not let the fungi live. Thus, it is beneficial to people with chronic candidiasis (yeast infections).

There is enough evidence to show that ACV can aid in decreasing triglyceride levels. In one study, it is found that it has reduced serum triglyceride levels and increased HDL (“good” cholesterol).

Recommended Dosage

Generally, a teaspoon of ACV – mixed with glass of water – can be taken once or twice in a day. This produces better malic acid and gives better energy. For treating heartburn, you can take ACV in dosages of 1 to 3 teaspoons up to 3 times per day after meals. To prevent yeast functions, one can take two to three times of ACV daily.

Apple Cider Vinegar aids as a naturopathy agent. It prevents gastritis by increasing the production of hydrochloric acid. As advised by your naturopath or doctor, taking a tablespoon of ACV with meals will improve digestion. If the symptoms of gastritis become worse, discontinue it and avoid digestive aids producing hydrochloric acid.

Is apple cider vinegar bad for gastritis?

Sometimes ACV can have bad effects if taken with other ingredients like cranberry juice. So if you are allergic to acidic products, then neutralize the acid of apple cider vinegar with baking soda. But always listen to your body. Do the “Apple Fast” if you see the benefits of ACD for some time and worsens later.

In another forum, a patient reported that ACD made the gastritis symptoms more worse. Generally, the pH of aloe vera is 4, while that of ACV is 2.4. So this makes the acidic nature of stomach more bad. But we have seen earlier, the compound that is released is hydrochloric acid, which aids in better digestion.

So we can conclude from the above discussion, that some people have good effects of ACV while some worsen the current state. So don’t just go by the folklore and consult a good physician before you start taking ACV for gastritis. You also need proper dosage, if you are having ill-effects of it. . But if you are alcoholic, that can also have adverse effect on your gastric problems. In that case, take the recommendation of your clinical health provider. From the research I have done, I have found several cases, where things got worse with ACV. So you should gradually reduce the dosage, in that case, instead of completely absconding it. But few people reported, that they had good results while using ACV, though not completely cured.

So try on a trial basis and if it improves your health, continue using it, otherwise shun it.!!!
