Ways to Get Rid of Gas Cramps and Pain
When I searched Google, there was no proper definition for “Gas Cramps”. Most of the articles were related to “gas pain” or “bloating”.
A cramp is a sudden, severe, and involuntary muscle contraction or over-shortening; while generally temporary and non-damaging, they can cause mild-to-excruciating pain, and a paralysis-like immobility of the affected muscle(s).
So if a cramp occurs due to gas, we can call it “gas cramps”. So what does “gas” mean? It is air in your digestive tract, which is nothing but the large, muscular tube that extends from your mouth to your anus. Most of the people have similar signs and symptoms for “gas cramps”.
What are the Symptoms and Signs?
Some of these include –
- Passing gas voluntarily or involuntarily, either as belches or as flatus.
- Occurrence of sharp, jabbing pains or cramps in your abdomen.
- A “twisted” feeling in your abdomen.
- Indications of Swelling and Tightness in your abdomen.
Gas can be mistaken for heart disease, gallstones and Appendicitis. If gas comes with prolonged abdominal pain, chest pain, weight loss, continuous or recurrent nausea, bloody stools, change in stool color or frequency, then you need to check up with a doctor.
What Foods Work For Gas Cramps?
Since “gas cramps” are related to pain caused by gas, any remedy that works for gas pain also works for it. Ginger, peppermint and cinnamon are only a few items that work wonders for gas relief. Angela Lemond, RDN, CSP, LD, a Texas-based dietitian and nutritionist, defines a carminative medicine as a substance that aids in the expulsion of gas. There is a longer list of carminatives below.
The Best Home Remedy
One of the natural herbs that aids in gas ousting is Ginger, according to a study published in the European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology in 2008. It is found that ginger helps speedy digestion which is a predominant factor in gas pain reduction. This helps gas move more quickly into your small intestine to relieve gas and bloating. Many people even take ginger supplements preventatively, to get rid of gas pains.
Carminatives to Reduce Gas Cramps
Below are the most common carminatives that reduce gas cramps:
Another way to get rid of gas cramps is using probiotics. These are live microorganisms, mostly “good” bacteria. They’re available as dietary supplements which are also present in our natural food. Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your health, especially your digestive system. We usually think of bacteria as something that causes diseases. But your body is full of bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics are often called “good” or “helpful” bacteria because they help keep your gut healthy.
Probiotics are naturally found in your body. You can also find them in some foods and supplements.
A common way to get rid of gastric pain is using over-the-counter drugs. These are generally in the form of simethicone, activated charcoal, or a natural food enzyme known as alpha-galactosidase. These help in digesting the non-digestible foods like beans and certain vegetables.
Some of these drugs are effective to some people and for some aren’t. For example, Alpha-galactosidase is helpful in digesting sugar in beans and like-vegetables, but the enzyme lacks the strength to dissolve gas produced by fiber or lactose.
Natural Foods That Can Get Rid of Gas Cramps
- Yogurt etc.
Pumpkin is a natural food that helps get rid of gas pain. Improper food digestion is another cause for production of gas. That is why, even though high fiber foods (like beans) are good for health, they create problems regarding flatulence. Pumpkin reduces the amount of gas created. You can eat it baked, steamed or broiled or create a recipe of your own. Take approximately 1 cup of pumpkin with your meal to reduce the gas.
A glass of lemon water a day can keep your doctor away. Though this rhyme doesn’t resonate as much as the “apple” proverb, it’s still a better habit. Grab 1 cup of water, 3 slices of fresh lemon, squeeze the juice into the water, stir it and drink the whole glass.
Chewing food thoroughly can also reduce gas pain. This will break the food into smaller pieces making it easier to digest.
Foods To Avoid To Reduce and Prevent Gas
There are also some foods to avoid to prevent gas cramps. Better stop consuming carbonated beverages after eating fast foods. These can cause bloating and gas pains. Reducing your soda or beer can reduce gas symptoms quickly.
Cruciferous Vegetables – such as broccoli, cauliflower or Brussels sprouts should always be cooked before eating to avoid gas.
Processed Carbs – Sugary, chemically enhanced foods are tough on the digestive system.
Beans – Beans are the magical fruit; however, you can reduce your chances of flatulence by soaking the beans as it helps the digestibility of them.
What To Do If You Has Gas Cramps
Eat your food in small proportions until your gas cramps subside. This will give you less of a chance to produce gas. The amount of food to be digested becomes less and this reduces the burden for the stomach.
Smoking and Drinking is bad for gas. When you smoke there is extra consumption of air, which leads to gas pains. Avoiding it can get rid of gas cramps in the long run.
Light exercise in the form of walking or jogging can help food move through your digestion tract more quickly. This will help the gas come out earlier, in case it is produced. Also, exercise aids the production of juices which aid in digestion.
Never hold gas in! Holding gas in will lead to severe discomfort and gas pain. No matter how embarrassing releasing gas or flatulence may be, it is better than the painful ulterior. Below is a quick video to get you in a better wind releiving pose:
Cramps can be sudden and also unwarranted and can give you terrible pain. Working with it becomes difficult as you concentrate on the pain. By taking precautions and preventive measures such as above, getting rid of gas pain is not a wonder. Gas has to be released in some way, quickly sneak into the bathroom if possible, but whatever you do, do not hold it in. Follow the natural and less natural remedies to relieve your gas.
