When I searched Google, there was no proper defintion for “Gas Cramps”. Most of the articles were related to “gas pain” or “bloating”.
A cramp is a sudden, severe, and involuntary muscle contraction or over-shortening; while generally temporary and non-damaging, they can cause mild-to-excruciating pain, and a paralysis-like immobility of the affected muscle(s).
So if a cramp occurs due to gas, we can call it “gas cramps”. So what does “gas” mean? It is air in your digestive tract, which is nothing but the large, muscular tube that extends from your mouth to your anus. Most of the people have similar signs and symptoms for “gas cramps”.
What are the Symptoms and Signs?
Some of these include –
- By passing gas voluntarily or involuntarily, either as belches or as flatus.
- Occurrence of sharp, jabbing pains or cramps in your abdomen.
- A “twisted” feeling in your abdomen.
- Indications of Swelling and Tightness in your abdomen.
Many-a-times gas can be mistaken for heart disease, gallstones and Appendicitis. Only if the gas came with prolonged abdominal pain, chest pain, weight loss, continuous or recurrent nausea, bloody stools, change in stool color or frequency, you need to check up with a doctor.

Since “gas cramps” are related to pain caused by gas, any remedy that works for gas pain also works for it. Ginger, peppermint and cinnamon which are essential kitchen items, may also work wonder for gas relief. According to Angela Lemond, RDN, CSP, LD, a Texas-based dietitian and nutritionist, defines a carminative medicine as a substance that aids in the expulsion of gas.

You can take 1 cup of pumpkin with your meal to far away gas. You can eat it baked, steamed or broiled or create a recipe of your own.
Activated charcoal is another ingredient which reduces gas pain for unknown reason. Before you take this, please consult your doctor regarding dosing etc. There is capsule, tablet and powder variety.
A glass of lemon water a day can keep your doctor away. Though this rhyme doesn’t resonate that much as the “apple” proverb, it’s still a better habit. Heat 1 cup of water, so that it’s just warm. Cut 3 slices of fresh lemon and squeeze the juice into the water. Stir it and drink the whole glass. You can substitute fresh lemon with tablespoon of lemon juice.
Empty your stomache in case if you feel more gassy. It’s better not to hold gas in your stomache and absorb the pain. Better release it in the form of motion or some other way by going to the bathroom etc. The air should not get stuck inside and its better that it comes out in one way or the other.
Chewing food thoroughly can also reduce gas pain. This will break the food into smaller pieces and it’ll make the inner side more comfortable in digesting. This makes it more easy for the juices inside to digest your food and produce less gas.
There are also some foods to avoid to prevent gas cramps. Better stop consuming carbonated beverages after eating fast foods. These can cause bloating and gas pains. Reducing your soda or beer with water can reduce the gas symptoms quickly.
Eat your food in small proportions until your gas cramps subside. This will give less chance for your intestine to produce gas. Also the amount of food to be digested becomes less and this reduces the burden for the stomach.
Smoking and Drinking is bad for gas. When you smoke there is extra consumption of air, which leads to gas pains. Avoiding it can get rid of gas cramps in the long run.
Light exercise in the form of walking or jogging can help food move through your digestion tract more quickly. This will help in making the gas come out earlier, in case it is produced. Also exercise helps for better production of juices which aid in digestion.
Cramps can be sudden and also unwarranted. They can give you terrible pain if you have them in office or in a party. Working with it becomes difficult as the concentration is in the pain area. By taking precautions and preventive measures like above, getting rid of gas pain is not a wonder. Gas has to be released in some sort of way and the less foul the smell, the less the embarassment. But if you find ways to release it in a safe way, you will feel light and comfortable.
