There can be several reasons for bloating. But it’s a painful once it attacks you. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) has also some unpleasant symptoms like feeling heavy and bloated. Generally this occurs in women and on a menstrual cycle. So every month, ladies have to suffer this inconvenience because of water retention or gas.

Several home remedies exist for this simple trouble. Dandelion tea is a mild diuretic which will help get rid of the water your body is containing. It simply stimulates bile to help break-down fatty meals which is also one cause of bloating. Its better to drink one cup every day.

Drinking water is also one of the remedies for bloating. This is easy and a simple method of reducing acidity in the stomach.

  1. Avoid carbonated beverages
  2. Limit gas–producing foods
  3. Avoid salty foods
  4. Fibre Rich Diet
  5. Swallow Less Air
  6. Eat Less of Intolerable Foods
  7. Peppermint Tea or Capsules

Drinks like soda and seltzer contain carbon dioxide, which causes the bubbling we see in our glass. These bubbles enter our digestive track and could be the cause for distension. If bloating is one of the symptoms of PMS, then its best to stick with ordinary water.

Certain fatty foods and carbohydrates are harder for the digestive system to break down. A bye-product of this tough process is gas. If gas is the primary issue of bloating, then its better to minimize foods like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, beans and cabbage during the problematic periods.

Salty foods are the cause of more water-retention and can make your usual PMS more worse. To reduce the overall distention, its better to avoid the saltiest ingredients of your diet. These may be including deli and processed meats (like bacon, sausage, and hot dogs), canned soup, pickles, many frozen entrées, and salty condiments like soy sauce, ketchup, and bottled salad dressing.

Constipation could be another cause of serious bloating. You can prevent it with a fibre-rich diet, drinking lots of fluids and taking regular exercise. Even 2o – 30 minute walk, 4 times a week can improve your bowl function.

Talking and eating at the same time can cause bloating. Sitting upright and not in a slumped position can reduce the swallowing of air. You also need to reduce the amount of fizzy drinks, stop chewing gum and chew with your mouth closed, so that you are not taking excess air.

There are certain food products like wheat or gluten and dairy products which are a cause of worry. If you have a food intolerance to such type of foods, than its better to eat less of the culprit food or stop them completely.

People with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) also complain of bloating, especially in the evening. This type of bloating is not because of wind. Peppermint tea or capsules can help ease IBS symptoms.

2 oz of Olive oil mixed with 2 oz of lemon juice and drinking every day can cure bloating. The extra benefit is it can also solve kidney stone problems.

Another home remedy is like this:

  • pinch of cardamom pods
  • pinch of fennel seeds
  • and some fresh peppermint
  • add boiling water let stand for a minuter or two then sip away

A temporary cure for bloated stomach is to drink one pint of Magnesium Citrate, which costs about $3 at a drug store with plenty of water. The stomach will bubble a bit but within couple of hours you will have temporary relief.

@Chireu: If its burning sensation, drink lot of fluids like water, butter-milk etc. Also after taking food, do a brisk walk. Also since you are from IIT, I think you might be having lot of study-induced stress. So do some simple yoga exercises and relax more. Breath fresh air…BTW, I’m also an alumni of IITK.
